Before you can book

To take the theory test for a B licence you need a valid körkortstillstånd (learner's permit). You apply for it at Transportstyrelsen (the Swedish Transport Agency), and the application includes a health declaration and an eyesight certificate.

You also need to complete both parts of the riskutbildning (risk education). Part 1 covers alcohol, drugs, fatigue and risky behaviour. Part 2, often called halkbanan, is a practical session on a skid track.

Tip: You can study for the theory test long before your permit arrives. Most learners start practising questions in the first weeks.

Test format

The theory test is taken on a computer at a Trafikverket test centre. The format is the same everywhere in Sweden.

65scored questions
50 mintime limit
52correct to pass

The test also includes a few unscored trial questions that Trafikverket uses to try out new material. You won't know which ones they are, so answer every question carefully.

What's on the test

Questions cover five areas of knowledge:

  1. Traffic safety and risky situations
  2. Traffic rules, including right of way and speed limits
  3. Road signs and road markings
  4. The driver: alcohol, fatigue, attention
  5. The vehicle and environment: technology, eco-driving, winter

Many questions are built around photos of real traffic situations. Reading the picture correctly is as important as knowing the rule.

Practise in the real format

Körkort Hero mock exams use the same 65 questions and 50 minutes as the real test.

Test languages

You can take the theory test in Swedish, English and several other languages. Check the current list on Trafikverket's website when you book. If you study in another language, learn the Swedish key terms as well, since they appear on signs and in everyday traffic.

On test day

  • Bring valid ID. Without it you can't take the test.
  • Arrive early. Late arrivals may lose their slot.
  • You get your result directly after the test.

A passed theory test is valid for two months. You need to pass the driving test within that period, otherwise you have to take the theory test again.

How to prepare

Start with lessons to understand each rule, then practise topic by topic. When you score well on topics, move on to full mock exams. Go back to every question you got wrong until you understand why.

When you pass mock exams consistently with a margin above 52, you're ready to book.
